The British occupation forces constructed the airport to be used in receiving their aircrafts.
It was handed over to the Egyptian civil authority in 1945 who developed it in order to receive large aircrafts with four engines; it accommodates from 10 to 14 passengers, but the airport was stopped being in use after June war 1967, and then was inaugurated to be in use in air traffic in 1977, where the Egyptian civil aviation authority develops and improves its services and equipments, runways had been lengthened to 1500 meter to receive Fokker aircrafts (37 helicopter) and other similar models.
